Rice Rugby - Be a rugger - Dec. 18 2008

Rice Rugger Alumni,

The title feels good, doesn"t it? I am sure all of you, like myself, have added quite a few titles to your name. Be it doctor, lawyer, manager, editor, even CEO, you get the message (don"t know of a senator amongst us, but who knows?). Regardless, being called a "Rice Rugger" signifies something more special to me. It represents camaraderie, leadership, athleticism, discipline, and revelry. I would like to add a descriptor, that of responsibility - a responsibility to help continue the legacy and build a tradition for current and future generations.

We are asking for a financial contribution to uphold this responsibility. Why is money important? The fees have risen to play rugby in Texas, and support is needed to fund coaches, equipment, and scholarships. Yes, for the first time in club history, the alumni have given a thousand dollar scholarship to a deserving player for contributions on the field and in the classroom. Currently, the endowment for Rice Rugby stands at just over $100k, and interest from the endowment is distributed each year to the current team. Some of you have donated in the past, and in substantial amounts, including the generosity of elite rugby donors such as Chip Mathews, Stewart Morris, and soon to be Blake Hutchison.

We encourage you to assist in building the endowment; the details of how are listed below. The distributions are managed by us through the hard work of the RRFC Alumni Executive Board, which include Cary Kottler, Kent Bayazitoglu, Mike Flynn Obrien and others... We spend the money prudently, and 100% is delivered to the team.

Do not assume the team will continue without our help. Do not take it for granted the alumni rugby game will exist, or that maybe your sons will share in the privilege of playing rugby at Rice. External and internal forces are always and will continue to threaten the team"s survival. So step up to the plate, donate to the endowment, support the team, and proudly call yourself a "Rice Rugger".
